Highlights of Overseas Migration in 2005

 



     

  • Total number of departures for foreign employment increased by 7.6% from 214, 709 in 2004 to 230, 963 in 2005.
  • Nearly 60% (59.32%) of those who migrated were women.
  • As much as 91% of these women migrated to work as housemaids.
  • A 16.44% increase of male migrants was recorded in 2005.
  • Private remittances ranked the second highest foreign exchange earnings in 2005 and amounted to Rs. 191,800 million.
  • Of this amount Rs. 108,999 million was remitted by migrant workers in the Middle East.
  • The majority of Sri Lankans migrated to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar and Lebanon for employment
