RUK RAKAGANNO

RUK RAKAGANNO - the tree Society was formed in 1975 to create environmental Awareness of the value of trees and forests.Today, it is firmly commited to the conservation of forests and biodiversity and an appreciation and conservation of the funa and flora particularly the trees of this country. We aim to work mainly with rural people who live close th the forests and who should be its chief custodians. Ruk Rakaganno is registered with the Registrarof companies, the Centrl Environmenta Authority and the NGO Council of Sri Lanka. we are also registered as a chrity.

Ruk Rakaganno has been lobbying policy makers since 1975 on Environmental matters and works closely with the Forest Department.We have translated a book on "Biodiversity and Biodependence-the Sri Lankan Experience" into Sinhala and "A Laypersons' Guide to the some trees of Sri Lanka" is shortly to go to the printers. The Organisation has considerable experience in conductiong workshops, Seminars, Tree planting programs in the provinces and has links with rural NGOs.

Ruk Rakaganno formed the Women's Environment Centre in 1992 in order to give a voice to the concerns of rural women at the rapid loss natural resources particularly due to deforestation. We have been conductiong many workshops on this subject, we publish a newsletter in 3 languages. (Kantha Parisara Puwath) have published a book on environtally friendly agriculture (Kanthavanata Parisarika Ath Velak) and have organized two national conferences for women on Environment and Development. The Tree Nursery Program has produced over 20,000 trees and women have earned over Rs.40,000/- from this project. Our Women's Project in Passara has yielded some good results. Many rural women's organisations work with the WEC - The Women's Environment Center is a member of the Women's NGO Forum and participated in the 4th International Conference on Women held in 1995 in Beijing.
