The Centre for Women and
Development was recently established in 1998. Its main aim is to promote
equality of the sexes in all spheres of life. The method used would be through the
effective dissemination
of information regarding the evolution of the role of women in society.
Objectives:
-
Consisting in increasing women's
participation in the development process
-
Implementation of measures towards the
realisation of such an objective
This organisation
consists of an Advisory Council, a Secretariat, a Functional Unit, and a Women's
Committee at the village level. An outstanding feature, unique to this
organisation, is
that its membership
is open to both men and women. This enables maximum participation from both sexes, which
brings
about the formation of more effective local committees.
Activities:
Although at present, the activities of the organisation are confined to the northern part
of Sri Lanka, there
is an intention of expanding. However, its activities are numerous.
